How to prepare for abdominal ultrasound
Good preparation is the difference between a clear study and a limited one. Gas and food residue scatter sound waves — fasting exists to reduce that problem for upper abdominal organs.
Standard checklist
- Fast for the hours stated at booking (often 6–8 hours)
- Ask whether plain water is allowed
- Take vital medicines only as your doctor permits
- Avoid chewing gum and smoking during the fast (air swallowing)
- Wear two-piece clothing
Combined abdomen + pelvis
You may need both fasting and a full bladder. Follow the combined instruction sheet carefully; arriving with an empty bladder can delay the pelvic portion.
In the scan room
Gel is applied to the skin; you may be asked to change position or take a breath in. Mild probe pressure is normal. Tell the team if any area is tender.
Afterwards
You can usually eat unless another test the same day still requires fasting.
Reports
A hard-copy report is usually ready within 15–20 minutes after the scan. Soft copies can be downloaded from the Reports page with your Patient ID for 3 days after upload — please save the file to your device.
