KUB ultrasound preparation
KUB ultrasound evaluates kidneys and urinary bladder (and ureteric jets or dilatation when visible). Bladder filling is not a formality — it is part of the imaging technique.
Why fill the bladder
Fluid inside the bladder creates an acoustic window. Views of the bladder wall and distal ureters improve. Arriving after emptying often means waiting to drink again.
How to time fluids
- Follow the centre’s volume and timing advice
- Stop voiding from the time staff specify
- If you reach extreme discomfort, tell the front desk — do not silently leave to empty without telling anyone
Fluid restriction patients
Heart failure or dialysis patients must not follow generic “drink 1–2 litres” advice blindly. Ask your physician how to modify preparation.
What we assess
- Kidney size and echo pattern
- Hydronephrosis
- Visible stones
- Bladder outline when filled
