When is CT needed for kidney stones?
Not every stone episode needs CT. Many patients are evaluated with ultrasound and clinical findings first.
When CT is considered
- Inconclusive ultrasound with ongoing symptoms
- Suspected complications
- Procedural planning needing exact stone map
Radiation
CT uses ionising radiation; benefits should outweigh risks for your situation — discuss with your clinician.
If CT is booked
Ask whether contrast is required. Bring prior reports. Follow fasting rules if any.
